Acupuncture is a key element of traditional Chinese medicine and has been practised for more than two thousand years. Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions and to alleviate various types of pain or dysfunction, in both acute (recent onset) and chronic (long standing) conditions.
Acupuncture takes a holistic approach in understanding dysfunction, and encourages balance of the body.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific acupuncture points, on meridians (or channels) in the body to various depths. Meridians (or channels) are not anatomically identical to the distribution of nerves or blood vessels.
The number of the needles used may vary and the site of insertion may be at, near, or away from the symptomatic area. For example, needles may be inserted on patient’s foot to treat lower back pain.
Acupuncture needles are single-use, disposable sterile needles.
When used correctly by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is a very safe, effective and a natural method of treatment with very few side effects.
The number of treatments needed varies. In many cases, people experience some changes in their symptoms within few sessions. However, it depends on the condition, severity and other factors.
